There were 790, mostly black, cattle yarded at Gloucester's store and weaner sale on Thursday, both steers and heifers selling $40 to $70 per head stronger than the previous sale.
Livestock agent, Michael Easey, Bowe and Lidbury, Gloucester said the quality of the cattle was outstanding, especially considering the dry times most weaners on offer had been born into.
"Gloucester was one of the hardest hit districts, but there were quality cattle right throughout the yarding, mostly under 300 kilos," Mr Easey said.
"There's not a many weaners left in the region, this would be one of the last weaner sales around."
The 400 weaner steers in the draft sold from $800 to $1410/hd, for an average of $1200/hd.
Both the steer and heifer weaner sections of the sale were topped by Mackas Pastoral, Berrico, Gloucester who had 80 Angus cattle in the draft.
It was the first time Mackas Pastoral had sold in the Gloucester saleyards since they bought their property, Berrico, four years ago.
Their top pen were 26 unweaned Angus steers which sold for $1410/head, while their seconds sold for $1350/hd, both pens making more than 500c/kg. They were bought by Ray Tumney of Willina.
Dr John Le Guay, Bundook sold Knowla Livestock bred Angus lightweight steers for $1220/hd to CA Squires and Son.
Tomberua Partnership, Gloucester sold their run of weaner steers for $1200/hd to Tigrah Pastoral, Gloucester.
The 100 yearling steers yarded made from $1250 to $1610/hd.
Frank and Pearl Beggs of Gloucester sold Hereford steers for $1610/hd to Jeff Lowrey of Dungog.
Chris and Judy Edwards of Stroud Road sold Angus cross steers for $1320 to Alexander Downs of Merriwa.
There was around 300 weaner heifers yarded, selling for between $750 and $1150/hd.
Mackas Pastoral sold the tops of their weaner Angus heifers for $1150/hd while, Tomberua Partnership sold their Angus weaner heifers for $1120/hd.
Bob Dee of Bulahdelah sold Angus heifer weaners for $1110 to Mackaway Pastoral of Walcha.
Mr Easey said their was good competition from the local area, Hunter Valley, New England and the North West.
