MOVING from a cold Guyra winter to a bare, but equally cold new home at Cooma, the $16,000 Dubbo Herefords Australia top-priced Supple Panlicker may not notice the climate difference.
Winter temperatures will be similar in the Monaro as the heights of the New England Great Dividing Range but his new home still in drought, has less feed than he's seen so far in his lifetime at Guyra.
Bred by Ben and Leanne Rumble, Supple stud, Llangothlin, Panlicker, a son of Merawah Spotlight H35 and from Lindendale Annette 38 by Morganvale Educator, was purchased by Robert Hain for his Gunyah stud, Cooma, during the Helmsman electronic auction of the 59th annual Dubbo Herefords Australia National on June 2.
As the sale was in progress, Mr Hain was yarding Gunyah stud females for transport to agistment at Yeoval.
The traditional show and sale on the Dubbo showground was obviously not on this year due to the covid pandemic, however, the sale cleared 16 of 23 bulls from seven studs for a $8375 average while four stud females sold to a top of $10,500 and averaged $5875.
Only seeing his purchase in photos prior to the sale, Robert Hain said selection circumstances were certainly different this year, but reports on the bull confirmed his interest that Panlicker had the smooth muscle pattern, soft and easy doing and conformation he liked.
"He looks as best put together as any bull can be," he said.
Supple stud sold three bulls for an $8000 average with two making $4000 each. The first was the 890kg at 24 months Supple Playful, purchased in utero of Sevenbardot Mischief H309 and sired by Sevenbardot Bruce, purchased by the Seaman family's Lochness Pty Ltd, Corona, Laggan; the second, Supple Photograph, by Morganvale Educator and from Lindendale Daisy 11, weighing 848kg at 23 months purchaed by Phillip Cummons, Ensay, Victoria.
The second top price of $15,000 was paid for Hargraves bred Grathlyn Pacemaker, a son of the imported New Zealand sire Koanui Techno. Buyer was Llandillo stud principal John Neradovsky, The Lagoon, Bathurst, who said he wanted a Techno son for his high eye muscle area (EMA) and carcase traits which would increase thickness within his herd.
Grathlyn stud, operated by the Rayner family's Max and Gai with son, Andrew and wife Brooke at Hargraves near Mudgee, enjoyed another Dubbo fixture success when all six bulls sold up to $15,000 (second top price) to average $9833 and two heifers sold to $4500 and averaged $3750.
Morganvale stud of Allen Morgan and family, Keith, South Australia, cleared all three bulls for an $5667 average with Morganvale Pattison by Morganvale Larkin, making the draft's top money at $10,000 when purchased by Richard Morgan and family, Ballyrogan, Vic.
Two other bulls sold at $8000 each with Morganvale Pinpoint by Glendan Park Lambert selling to Ann Hallett, Elder Green stud, Riverton, SA, and Morganvale Pegleg by Mount Difficult Kearney, purchased by Checkers Pastoral Company, Checkers, Cargo.
Armidale-based Eathorpe stud of Oliver Jeffery sold one bull for $9000 being one of a trio of new sires averaging $8000 for Tirlta Station, Broken Hill, who also paid $9000 for one of two Grathlyn bulls.
Eathorpe Potential, homebred sired by Eathorpe Influential weighed 965kg at 22 months while the other at $9000 was Grathlyn Peacemaker by Grathlyn Landmark.
Armada stud of Brooke and Andrew Rayner, Hargraves, gained $6000 for Armada Gaz sired by Columbian Rifle, when purchased by Georges Island Ag, Springfield, Quirindi.
A 13 month-old embryo transfer (ET) heifer, offered by Jemma and Tim Reid, JTR stud, Roslyn, JTR Cherry Ripe Q006 sired by Valma Landslide, topped the female section when sold for $10,500 to Caleb Croker, Talumbi stud, Goulburn.
Ivbank stud of Allan and Colleen Green, Walcha, sold one heifer at $5500 and a bull at $4000. The heifer, 12 month-old Ivy Bank Nellie Q003 by Tycolah Oakdale, was bought by Blake Lobe and Shannon Williams, Arralumba stud, Byawatha, Vic.
The Helmsman sale was conducted by Nutrien Stud Stock and Elders Stud Stock, Dubbo, through the AuctionsPlus platform.
