One of the first sons by American sire S Powerpoint WS 5503 to sell in Australia proved a major drawcard at the Heart Angus bull sale on Wednesday where prices topped at $13,000.
The Paterson family of Timbumburi were most impressed to sell all of their 36 bulls under the hammer to average $7084 thanks to the support of new and repeat clients from local areas. The result was also well up on the $4896 average achieved in 2019.
A total of 43 bidders registered their interest with the heifer suitability, genomic estimated breeding values and new genetics of the draft meeting the needs of the 22 successful buyers.
The grandstand seating and inspection yards were filled with plenty of smiling faces and the optimism of producers was clear to see with the positive seasonal outlook to 2020.
Top money came early for the third offering of the day, Heart Power House P53, who found a new home with Nicholas and Karen Morgan, Glenmorgan Angus, Llangothlin.
The 23-month-old son from top producing cow Millah Murrah Prue E7, who was purchased in 2013, weighed 870 kilograms with a 40 centimetre scrotal and was regarded by Mr Morgan for his weight for age, fleshing and spread of strong genomic estimated breeding values.
The Morgans currently run 480 cows and sell 120 yearling bulls a year but are looking to expand after purchasing neighbouring property.
"He is a different genetic base to what I use at my place," Mr Morgan said.
"I have got some Millah Murrah blood but this guy is coming from a different line."
His sire, S Powerpoint WS 5503, was a bull described by vendor Chris Paterson as a real meat machine in a heifer bull package with his three sons averaging $9333 on the day.
The heifer bull market was very strong on the day, a trend auctioneer Paul Dooley said would be a feature of the selling season.
"People will be joining every heifer they have," he said.
Bulk buying efforts came when Davidson Cameron and Co, Gunnedah, helped the Ranken Brothers to secure eight bulls averaging $6125. Not far behind was NT and E Higgins, Nowendoc, with four bulls averaging $10,000.
The yearling and rising two-year-old bulls had been prepared on oats since early April and represented sires including Millah Murrah Laker L24, Spicklers Power Point, Conneally Capitalist 028, Ascot Hallmark H147, Musgrave Big Sky, Karoo Knockout K176, Cherylton Klooney M62 and JMB Traction 292.
Mr Paterson thanked those in attendance and revealed they would be looking to grow their operation and expand their genetic offering after purchasing more land.
Selling agents were Chris Paterson Stock and Station Agent Pty Ltd, Tamworth, with Paul Dooley, Tamworth, as guest auctioneer.
