Winston and Susie McDonald, Royalla Merinos, Wallendbeen penned 40 Merino rams for their annual on-property sale recently and were very excited to see 33 sold for an average price of $1672.
The top price at $4400 was paid by repeat buyer Geoff Gilbert who manages The Grove, Trunkey Creek for John Wilton.
They have been selecting rams at Royalla for the past six years and concentrate on those within the 18 micron range.
"John selects the rams on their figures in the catalogue and when I am at the ram sale I check their conformation," Mr Gilbert said.
"John is keen to advance the productivity of his flock through the use of technology.
"Our grown ewes are cutting six kg plus of beautiful soft handling long-stapled wool."
Mr Gilbert noted the ewe hoggets this year had cut 5.2kg.
"In the past six years we have taken the flock from cutting 4kg to over 6kg," he said.
Fleece measurements of the ram show 17.5m, 2.4 SD and 99.8 percent comfort factor while the ram weighed 97kg. Mr Gilbert bought four rams for an average price $2050.
Volume buyers included the Dymock family, Boorowa who purchased eight for a $2250 average price and Feld and McCormack Partnership, Marulan who selected seven rams from the draft for an average price of $1000.
Stud co-principal Winston McDonald was 'absolutely thrilled'.
"The best we have ever had and the clearance was phenomenal," he said.
Nutrien Ag Solutions conducted the sale.
