Just as farmers in the Harefield area south of Junee were anticipating a big harvest along comes a hailstorm to shred their ambitions.
Along the Aerodrome Lane, east of the Olympic Highway, Peter Corbett said the hail was severe but it was limited to isolated areas and only about a third of his crops have been affected.
"Although we have had some damage which still needs to be assessed, it is not all bad for us," he said.
"There has been damage in some of the wheat and canola crops, while the oats has taken a big hit and the field peas are not happy with being knocked to the ground."
Mr Corbett was disappointed because of the lost yield potential, a point also made by district agronomist Angus Knight.
"There were crops with the probability of a big harvest now almost completely devastated," Mr Knight said.
"But farmers can still salvage their crops either by grazing or make hay or silage."
