Westray and Genanegie Merinos - two sales in one day - 171 rams average $2665

Westray stud operated by Ray Cannon and son, Blake Tremain-Cannon, cleared all 120 rams at auction for a healthy average of $2800 with the top price of $7000 with seven other rams making $6000 each and another at $6500. This year's average is $236 above last year's result.

Genanegie stud, operated by the Swain and Tremain-Cannon partnership, also cleared all 51 rams at auction for an average of $2348 and a top at $6500. This average is $148 above last year.

Westray stud's sale-topper was a poll ram from the Lustre family and sired by Westray Lustre, a son of Banavie Lustre. The ram was growing 19.2 micron wool and was one of four rams purchased by Duntulm Warialda Pty Ltd, Duntulm, Wariadla, for an average of $3438.

Bidding on the phone through his shearer was Paul Vernon, Gunners Dam, in the Curra Creek district near Wellington. His shearer, Blake Skelly of Statewide Shearing, did the bidding to secure Westray's second top-priced ram at $6500 for a 20.7 micron ram from the Wonga blood Dark Blue Westray family.

Mr Vernon also bought two Genanegie rams including the sale-topper at $6500 and another at $5000 for his flock of 2500 ewes of 19.2 micron wool cutting an average five kilogram fleece. This is Mr Vernon's second purchase after first buying last year and likes both stud for their wool cutting sheep, a trait he is progressing within his flock.

Six Westray rams sold at $6000 with the first being bought by Matt Philipson for his Ballot Box flock of 2500 ewes of 19.5 to 20 micron among nine purchases averaging $3361.

Mr Philipson said his wethers at six months cut 5kg and said his wethers were proving their worth and could cut wool.

Among multi-lot buyers was the Collins Family Trust, Ballandrea, Walgett, purchased 19 rams, 13 from Westray at a $1442 average and six from Genangegie at $1000.

Cannon Partners Family, Oakleigh, Tomingley, secured 15 rams, 11 from Westray averaging $1727, topping at $3500, and four from Genanegie at $1000 each.

The Trudgett family at Euchareena, bought 12 rams of which 11 were fron Genanegie, while Pentdale Nominees, Carwell Station, Coonamble, secured 10 Westray rams.
