HILLCRESTON Park Merinos sale of plain-bodied, unmulesed superfine rams topped at $4000 on Friday and averaged 1983.33.
There were 30 rams sold under the hammer of a 42 total, but post-sale negotiations had a $7000 ram taken home by Roger and Yvonne Connley to their Victorian high country base at Omeo.
Don and Megan Price, Glenmore, Pyramul, paid $4000 for a 16.2 micron ultrafine ram with a curvature of 115.
Mrs Price won the bidding to add to 12 other rams on Glenmore.
Mr Price said they had been buying from the Picker family line of rams for 60 years and he had never imported a ram from anywhere else to service about 1000 ewes running south of Mudgee.
He reckoned the the super and ultra fine wool market will pick up soon, once China was done with "causing trouble it shouldn't be".
Hillcreston Park principal Danny Picker said the rams had spent all their days in the paddock and most of their lives in drought and since May had done magnificently.
The Hillcrest Park sale was followed immediately by Kalaree Poll Merinos sale.
Alex and Stephanie Willson offered 23 rams and sold to a top of $3000 twice.
Just five were passed in.
Mr Willson said their breeding program was aimed at creating dual purpose sheep.
He said he wanted breeders to have some protection from the vagaries of the wool market and the ability to produce heavy meatsheep also.
The sale was conducted by Nurien Ag Solutions Goulburn.
