Piallaway hay shed fire still burning more than three weeks later

The fire started in the early hours of Saturday, November 21, when Rural Fire Service (RFS) and NSW Fire and Rescue found the shed and hay well alight.

RFS district manager Paul McGrath said crews were regularly checking with and speaking to the Robinson Road property owner about the fire's status.

"Areas of it are still burning. We had someone go out there yesterday afternoon and meet up with the property owner," Mr McGrath said.

"It's being [checked] every few days and we catch up on the telephone."

The incident is still on Fires Near Me, which Mr McGrath said was because of increasing temperatures.

But there's no need to panic about it potentially spreading, either.

"At this stage it's just under control and there's no chance for it escaping," he told the Leader.

"If [the landholder] has any major concerns or if there's additional heat coming out of it, they've been told to call 000."

Mr McGrath said property owners needed to ensure they had fire safety plans in place.

"They need to review them annually and monitor and maintain weather conditions to undertake works on the property," he said.

The shed contained about 18,000 tonnes of barley and more than 6000 bales of hay.

The fire is still under investigation and the cause is yet to be determined.

The incident was one of the largest hay shed fires that crews had experienced in a while.
