A very small yarding of just under 600 cattle sold to a cheaper market at the final Wodonga store sale for the year on Friday.
Corcoran Parker auctioneer Leigh McEvoy said the small numbers were to be expected so close to Christmas and with the January weaner sales knocking on the door.
"Generally speaking the quality of cattle was down a bit on previous sales ... there's probably a few clean up jobs prior to Christmas and I think the market reflected that," Mr McEvoy said.
There were too few cows and cow and calf units to quote, with less than a dozen offered for each category.
Mr McEvoy said there were a handful of Angus steer weaners which made up to 450 cents per kilogram, to 460c/kg in some places.
"We had a few nice Euro steers range from around 425c/kg to 440c/kg," he said.
On a dollars per head basis steers weighing 400kg and above sold from $1310 for Fresian steers to $1950 for a pen of eight Shorthorn steers, 546kg, offered by Hartwould.
A second pen from Hartwould, with steers weighing an average 513kg sold for $1880.
Account Fine Line Engineering offered 15 Angus cross steers, 15 months, 449kg, which sold for $1830.
L Donjes, Mansfield, Victoria sold 20 Angus and Angus cross steers, two years old, weighing 482kg, for $1825.
Steers under 400kg attracted from $620 to $1700 for a pen of 15 Angus weaners, 371kg, from Mirima Angus.
CJ and AE McGee offered 24 Angus steers, 11 to 14 months, 378kg, which sold for $1665.
Don Hempel, Huon, Vic offered a run of 17 Red Angus weaner steers, 371kg, which sold for $1600. His second pen of eight, weighing 333kg, made $1505.
Mr Hempel said he usually sent his cattle to Gathercole's Wangaratta Abattoir but had given the store sale a go given the high prices up for grabs.
Mr McEvoy said heifers were making around the 400c/kg mark, some getting up to 410c/kg to 420c/kg.
On a dollars per head basis they sold from $330 to $1630.
