RIDERS from across the state and beyond have flocked to Tamworth for an action-packed weekend of rodeo and horse sports.

The ABCRA's three-day long Rodeo Round Up event began on Friday with a day of junior and novice-level competitions.

Held at the Australian Equine and Livestock Centre (AELEC), riders of all ages battled it out on the opening day of competition.

However, ABCRA executive officer Craig Young said the best action was still to come.

"Saturday is going to be a huge night for rodeo in Tamworth, all together we've got over six hours worth of rodeo competition," Mr Young said.

"We've been overwhelmed with entries and we're having to start three hours earlier than normal, so we're running a first performance from 3pm until 5.30pm, before a break and the main event at 6.30pm.

"Sunday is a big day as well, we'll have all of our time events such as: barrel racing, steer wrestling, calf roping and team roping.

"All of those events will begin at 8am on Sunday and should be all wrapped up by 2pm.

The ABCRA would normally hold its national championships event at this point in the year, however the COVID-19 forced organisers to revaluate this year's event.

"This is our first event rodeo wise in Tamworth at AELEC in more than 12 months and we've only had four or five rodeos run for the whole year nationally," Mr Young said.

"This is a great chance to see everybody that's keen to ride."

Mr Young said anyone interested in attending the event should "get in quick as tickets are selling fast".

"Ticket sales close off at 2000 and we were at 1600 or 1700 hundred this morning [Friday]," he said.

"I would expect we will sell out by Saturday morning so anyone who wants a ticket should get onto it pronto."
