First-cross ewes, ready to join, offered good value to buyers at the Corowa Special Sheep Sale on Friday selling from around $260 to $362, while lighter, unjoinable articles were almost as dear in parts of the yarding, selling from $256 to $278.
There were 5576 head yarded in total including 5098 ewe lambs.
Elders Steve Grantham said he thought sheep to put out and grow out sold exceptionally well.
"The ewes that are ready to join, it's similar to a bit dearer to what we saw at Deniliquin last week but I think they're pretty good value, some of these 50 kilogram ewes selling for $270 is good buying," Mr Grantham said.
Of the quality, Mr Grantham said the yarding was beautifully bred but the feed got too high in the spring and they did not present as heavy as expected.
"It's been hot and dry here the last couple of months, but the rain's coming next week," he said.
"I think the store job here at the minute is just a little bit flat but it's not going to last long.
"If you want to buy get in now because they're going to get dear."
The top price of the sale, $362, was achieved by John Bruce, Avondowns Pastural, Barooga for his pen of 157 Border Leicester cross Merino ewes, May/June 2020-drop, 59kg, with Boxleigh Park and Bauer blood, October-shorn.
Mr Bruce's second pen of 160 ewes sold for $350.
Other top sales included a pen of 130 Border Leicester cross Merino ewes, April/May 2020-drop, 58kg, by Fischer rams from FX and LA McLaurin, Yarra Vale, Holbrook, which sold for $320.
A pen of 70 Border Leicester cross Merino ewes, March/April 2020-drop, 55kg, from N and D Schilg, Sunshine Farms, Brocklesby also made $320.
In the younger ewes, the Stonnill's of Cocketgedong, Urana sold 220 Border Leicester cross Merino ewes, June/July 2020-drop, 42kg, December-shorn for $278.
Their second pen of 324, 35kg sold for $268, while the third, averaging 29kg sold for $256.
There were a couple of large pens of White Suffolk cross Merino ewe lambs which sold to a top of $264, for a run of 210, April/May 2020-drop, 64kg from D McFarland, Deniliquin.
Local buyers took advantage of the value in the market, while bidders from Victoria including Leongatha, Trafalgar and Ballarat were also active.
