New South Wales is cementing itself as home to some of the country's best Texas Longhorn genetics after a swag of breeders walked away with the top honours from recent breed competitions.
Following the cancellation of the breed's annual show in Scone last year, members from across the country travelled to Tenterfield recently to attend an AGM and presentation dinner.
It was there that the results of the halter show, complete animal show and horn measurement competitions, which were run virtually, were announced.
Phenotype and structure is still number one when judging the breed followed by colour, horn shape, horn set and temperament.
TLA life member Don Constable took on the job of halter show judge and declared Kooroora Halloween from Rodney, Kerry and Adelaide Cooper, Kooroora Longhorns, Scone the champion female of the show.
She was able to fight off champion bull N-Bar Outlaw from N-Bar Longhorns, Banana, Queensland to secure the supreme champion title.
Now three-year-old, Halloween was the first calf from the bargain buy Yarrow Creek Alien and sired by Southern Cross Ironbark boasting highly sought after breeding from America.
Mr Cooper, who is also the president of TLA, commended the quality of entries and the large number of children who got involved in the competitions.
His herd like many other members had been reduced during the drought, 55 head ended up at four heifers, four cows, a bull and a steer.
Ease of calving is a major asset to the breed and Mr Cooper said Texas Longhorns were gaining interest from producers post-drought.
"There seems to be a few getting around with the drought breaking and people have got that bit of extra feed so they are probably willing to take a risk and get into something different," he said.
"Understandably for a lot of people it is hard to get around that mindset of having an animal with horns but then people see the profit you can make form them with the horns, hide and good lean meat."
Of the 30 halter show award winners, 19 of them were secured by NSW breeders.
The prestige of the longest horns went across the border to HBL JR from Michael and Lynda Bethel of Horseshoe B Longhorns who measured 314 centimetres (124 inches).
Unfortunately the rising 16-year-old steer and 2013 Guinness World Record holder passed away in December.
From the 41 entrants the longest NSW representative was the 219 centimetres (86.5 inches) Southern Cross Salt from Don Constable, Galong, who placed second in the cow four to 11 years class.
Rounding out the awards was the complete animal competition which attracted 60 entries and was judged by Canada's Clinton Bezan.
This year's competition featured two new categories (cows and steers 12 years and over) to showcase the breeds longevity.
NSW winners were Southern Cross Renegade owned by Geoff and Belinda Dawson, Skinny Lizard Longhorns, Gunnedah was awarded champion bull while the Cooper family of Yarrow Creek Longhorns at Scone received reserve with Southern Cross Iron Bark.
The committee hope to hold a 'face to face' show this year on September 11 at Scone. The annual show will follow on September 12.
