Very good lines of vendor-bred cattle were on offer at Thursday's store cattle sale at Northern Victoria Livestock Exchange, Wodonga, when 1351 head were penned.
Values continue to be strong and breeders are reaping the benefits of low numbers combined with excellent seasonal conditions across the north-east and persistent consumer demand for beef.
Indicative values for weaner steers 300kg to 400kg ranged from $1885 for Angus steers weighing 400kg to $1630 for Angus steers weighing 320kg; while those less than 300kg sold from $1510 for Angus steers weighing 291kg to $1350 for Angus steers weighing 239kg.
Yearling and grown steers weighing above 400kg sold from $1750 for 14 to 16 month Herefords weighing 400kg to $2016 for Angus weighing 483kg and $2100 for Angus weighing 568kg.

In the heifer pens, values for those weighing above 400kg ranged from $1895 (444kg) to $1760 (410kg) while those in the 300kg to 400kg bracket sold from $1730 (395kg) to $1440 (322kg).
Cows with calves sold to $2960 on very limited supply.
It was noted at the beginning of the sale, future store sales at NVLX Wodonga would be conducted fortnightly until such time supply increases.
Representative sales of weaner steers included 20 Llandarlo/Alpine Angus, 10 to 11 months and weighing 400kg sold on account LT and CE Briggs, Corryong, Victoria, for $1885: 30 Jarobee-blood Angus, 10 to 11 months and weighing 407kg sold for $1880 on account RA and SM Burnside, Samaria, Vic, and 12 Angus weighing 399kg sold by RC Amos and Angus Macdougall, Molyullah, Vic, for $1840.
Further sales of weaners included 13 black baldies weighing 364kg sold by SJ Forrest, Beechworth, Vic, for $1750: $1650 for 17 Limousin, seven to nine months and weighing 350kg sold by J and J Peters, Eskdale, Vic and $1750 for nine Rangan-blood Charolais weighing 396kg sold by B and S Tobin, Eskdale, Vic.
Yearling and grown steers sold for $2100 when Star Agriculture, Coleambally, offered five Angus weighing 568kg and J and J Peters, Eskdale, Vic, penned eight Limousin weighing 506kg; while DG and KL Daly, Jingellic, sold five Angus weighing 478kg for $2060.
Other sales included ten Limousin weighing 472kg sold for $2015 on account PT and LV Stewart, Benalla, Vic; nine Herefords weighing 424kg sold for $1800 on behalf RM Leliard and M Truzkowska, Jindabyne, and 11 Herefords weighing 429kg sold by RM and SJ Triggs, Meragle, for $1855.
In the heifer pens, 18 Herefords weighing 465kg sold for $1865 on account Brooklyn Pastoral, Mansfield, Vic; Davilak Pastoral Co, Mansfield, sold 16 Angus weighing 391kg for $1685 and DG and KK Daly, Jingellic sold nine Scotts Angus-blood, 14 to 16 months weighing 410kg for $1760.
Eleven Angus cows with calves sold for $2960 on account Bob Whytlaw, Benalla, Vic, while Troy Randall, Lurg, Vic, recieved $2780 for his pen of three Shorthorn cows with calves.
Local restockers competed with feedlot interests which was very strong.
The sale was conducted by Wodonga-based agencies BUR, Schubert Boers, Corcoran Parker and Peter Ruaro Livestock.
