HILLVIEW Quigley Q18 made it a double supreme win today when he took out the top honour in the Angus breed judging ring of the Sydney Royal Show amid a field of 69 head.
Winning supreme exhibit and the champion of champions title at the recent Canberra Royal Cattle Show in late February, Quigley Q18 made his way into the Sydney ring with the hope of continuing his reign.
Sired by LD Capitalist 316 and out of Hillview Jillian J35 he was exhibited by Danny and Debbie Hill of Hillview Angus, Bungendore as part of their team of five head on show this year.
He tipped the scales at 1188 kilograms with an eye muscle area (EMA) of 144 square centimetres with rump and rib fat measurements of 29 millimetres and 15mm.
Commenting on the supreme winner, judge Troy Setter of Consolidated Pastoral Company (CPC), Brisbane, Qld, said the bull caught his eye all day with his power, balance, weight and how well he carries himself around the ring.
It was an emotional win for the Hill family, with Danny Hill commenting in the 15 years on and off he had been showing at Sydney this was the stud's biggest win.
"I've got a few ribbons, and a reserve champion with a junior bull but this is my best win ever," Mr Hill said.
"I am going to sell semen out of him, and keep him... I like the bull so I'm going to keep him and use him."
Quigley Q18 is now destined for Beef Australia 2021 at Rockhampton next month.
Mr Setter said "both the grand champion bull and female were classic examples of the breed that will go on and represent the Angus well in the interbreed".
Grand champion Angus female went to PC Miss J260 Conversion M205 exhibited by Greg and Sharon Fuller of Pine Creek Angus, Woodstock.
"Functionality, fertility, volume and capacity" were the words used by judge Mr Setter to describe the four-year-old female.
"She is just right," he said. "She is thick yet feminine, has the smoothness and volume and is has a cracker calf at foot.
"You wouldn't want her any bigger, but the balance and capacity of the cow has got her on top here today."
The senior champion was sired by Millah Murrah Conversion J260 and out of PC Miss V14 Direction D226, and showed with a seven-month-old bull calf at foot sired by Vision Unanimous 1418 that weighed 600kg when the Fullers left home.
Rising to the top of the 39 head strong field of Angus females it was a well-deserved win for the Pine Creek stud, who originally was aiming to campaign the female for last year's Sydney Royal Show before it was cancelled.
"She was the interbreed champion female and overall champion of champions winner, beating our Angus interbreed bull, at last year's Canberra Royal and she was set up to come to Sydney before it was called off," Greg Fuller said.
"It is great to get her out, show her off and give her her time in the spotlight... The calf will now be weaned and she will stay at home."
Pine Creek was also awarded junior champion bull with PC Royal Roll R017, a 13-month-old son of LD Capitalist 316 that weighed 692kg with an EMA of 104 sq cm and rump and rib fats of 12mm and 8mm.
They also received first in the Angus breeder's group.
Entering the Angus section for the first time was Yallambee Angus, Belanglo who won reserve champion junior bull with their exhibit Yallambee Cowboy Up R1, a son of HA Cowboy Up 5405 out of Myanga Lady Louise L226 who was the 2018 Sydney Royal Show interbreed champion female and part of the Angus Hordern winning pair that same year.
The reserve junior weighed 670kg with an EMA of 101 sq cm and fats of 10mm and 6mm.
Tamworth based Killain Angus had a successful show exhibiting the junior champion heifer and reserve senior champion bull.
Killain Abigale 6 Q54 was the junior female that took the title at just 15 months of age. She was by SAV Raindance 6848 and out of Killain Abigale 2 L3.
Her sibling Killain Rainman P1, also by SAV Raindance 6848, won reserve senior bull. He weighed 1114kg with an EMA of 137 sq cm and fats of 18mm rump and 10mm rib.
Rainman P1 was the interbreed champion bull of the Five Star Creative Promotions Virtual Show last year, and went on to win Champion of Asia/Africa in the Angus Breeder Champion of the World competition.
Reserve junior champion female went to Tattykeel Miss Emilie Q20 exhibited by Tattykeel Angus, Oberon, and reserve senior champion female went to Diamond Miss Paspaley P401 exhibited by Christie Fuller, Diamond Angus, Cowra.
Dam's progeny group went to Tattykeel Angus' team of progeny from T&R Miss Essence J7, sire's progeny group and pair of two bulls went to Pine Creek Angus' LD Capitalist 316 team.
