The demand for quality weaners continues unabated with a solid sale today at Cooma when strong buying support from feedlots competed with restockers for the 2187 head on offer.
There was some very good lines of weaner steers yarded, with few weaner heifers as breeders are holding onto suitable females as they build their herds.
Elders Cooma manager Sam Green said the current prices for all stock would hold into the foreseeable future.
"The market is green-grass driven and there are few numbers," he said.
"On the Monaro, we are only about 40 per cent capacity and with feed about people are hanging on to their young heifers."
Values for weaner steers 300kg to 400kg ranged from $1725 (316kg) to $1895 (390kg), while those under 300kg sold from $1605 (209kg) to $1705 (294kg)
Heavy yearling steers sold to $2100 (625kg).
The few pens of heifers weighing under 300kg sold from $1390 (230kg) to $1610 (285kg).
A few representative sales of seven to ten month weaner steers included 14 Angus weighing 259kg sold by R and D Belcher, Bunyan, for $1680; seven Angus weighing 228kg sold by R and T Musgrave, Dalgety, for $1610 and 40 Hazeldean-blood Angus weighing 387kg sold by MB Trading Pty Ltd, Jindabyne, for $1800.
Other good sales included 18 Charolais cross steers weighing 390kg sold by Andrew Dunlop, Bungarby, for $1895 and 45 Rennylea-blood Angus weighing 298kg sold by Clea Pastoral Co, Jerangle, for $1760.
In the heifer pens, 14 Herefords weighing 421kg sold for $1670 on account Cottage Creek, Cooma: Tom Burke and Sons, Cooma received $1610 for nine Rennylea-blood Angus weighing 285kg and A and M Matthews, Delegate, sold 17 Rosskin-blood Angus (unweighed) for $1420 with their second pen of 16 black baldies (no weight) sold for $1275.
Strong buying support from Tumut, Narrandera, Wodonga, Bungendore and Goulburn, was underpinned by feedlot activity and commission buyers.
The sale was conducted by Cooma Associated Agents Boller and Company, Elders and Nutrien Ag Solutions.
