FOR well over a century, pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim has worked to research and develop innovative solutions to improve the well-being of people, livestock and pets all around the world.

Commenting about the company's approach to innovation, Dr Andres Ardila, Technical Services Veterinarian, said that Boehringer Ingelheim is one of the few organizations that bring animal and human health and well-being together under one roof.

"The company takes a one-health approach to find innovations that will enrich animal and human health and further the company's ability to deliver breakthroughs in areas of unmet needs.

"Our passion for animal care has led us to develop game changing products for those who can't advocate for themselves. For example, in the past we introduced the revolutionary and trusted brands of Ivomec. Amongst other benefits, our range of Ivomec products such as Ivomec Pour-On, Ivomec Injection, Ivomec Eprinex and Ivomec Plus, deliver potent, broad-spectrum efficacy to combat both internal and external parasites"

More recently, we have launched a fixed-dose combination for cattle that includes trace minerals and vitamin B12, called Marks-Min®".

"Trace minerals are essential to body functions but are only required in very small amounts per day. Optimising trace mineral and vitamin B12 levels at critical times, like calving, weaning and joining can have a positive impact on health, immune status, growth and reproductive capacity of livestock." said Dr Ardila.

The right combination of trace elements and vitamin B12 is of great importance in any animal health management plan.

Vitamin B12 is key for energy production in ruminants. Ruminants cannot directly utilise energy from their diet and so, need to make their own. Vitamin B12 is an important part of this process. Ruminants also cannot utilise B12 directly from their diet. They must first take up cobalt through the diet, where it is then converted by rumen microorganisms to B12. If cobalt levels are low in pasture, B12 levels can fall and this can limit energy available for body processes.

Fortunately for producers, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health has combined these essential elements in Marks-Min, a trace mineral injection for cattle containing copper, manganese, zinc and selenium in combination with vitamin B12.

"Providing trace minerals and vitamin B12 together ensures the trace mineral building blocks for optimal health are available along with energy from vitamin B12 to help support the best response to trace mineral supplementation," said Dr Ardila.
