Tenterfield presented 1689 head of mostly weaner calves on Thursday with consistent lack Angus the dominant type, to average across the yarding 583.90 cents a kilogram at 250 kilograms or $1456 a head.
Vealer steers 200 to 280kg, 627 head, averaged 623.9c/kg or $1497.97/hd and reaching a top of 688.2c/kg and $1663.90.
Vealer heifers 200 to 280kg, 455hd, averaged 565c/kg or $1334.13 and reached a top of 633.2c/kg and $1724.84.
Most offerings were the result of late calving - a part of the ripple effect created by drought - so missed the incredibly high prices of March because they were too light.
Ray White Tenterfield principal Ben Sharpe points out that the additional 40kg put on these calves in the last two months equates to an extra $230 a head on today's market - and the demand for light weaners wasn't as strong at the march sale.
Producers were very happy, like Rob and Ruth Caldwell, whose late borne Angus steers with Speriby North blood averaged 616.9c/kg or $1606.86 at 260.5kg, with some of those calves going to repeat Tenterfield buyer Max Buckley, Cottesbrook.
Angus steers, European Union accredited from Tony Bates, Woodlands Pastoral at Black Swamp, stayed in the EU system for the most part, averaging 577.7c/kg or $1342.95 at 232.hkg and reaching a top of $1566.45 at 280kg.
Angus steers with Speriby North blood from Todd and Amelia Wilshire, Ballogie Holdings, Scrub Road, topped at $1590 for 265kg at 600.2c/kg. Their heifers topped the sale with a bid of $1724 at 633.2c/kg for 272.4kg - heavier than their brothers.
Rod and Margaret Dowe, Isla on the Steinbrook Hall Road, sold all their Angus steers to an average $1772 and reached a top of $1840 for 326kg at 565.2c/kg. All their heifers were retained.
"These steers were later calving, due to the drought, and were a bit light for the earlier sales but we are pleased with the result. These calves have performed very well considering where they started.
Robin and Bernie Ford, Sandy Flat, didn't get bogged trucking calves to the saleyards but their neighbours did and despite leaving behind two steers and a heifer on the other side of a swollen creek managed to sell late calving heifers heavier than their steers to average 568.2c/kg for 238.5kg or $1355 going to repeat buyer Bernard Waters, Darling Downs Qld at Quinalow, who likes Speriby North blood and will background them on improved pasture.
Brangus calves from Darrell and Margaret Smith, Tallawalla, Scrub road, Tenterfield, averaged 549.2c/kg or $1581.70 at 288kg for their steers and 512.2c/kg or $1429.04 at 279kg for their heifers which were bought by repeat purchaser Wayne Jones, Montana Downs, also on the Scrub Road. All progeny were first calves from young breeders fed through the drought.
Mark and Helen Clothier, Dingo Hill Partnership, Black Swamp, sold EU accredited Angus 211.3kg for 688.2c/kg or $1454.
John and Dianna Sharpe, Bolivia, also sold EU calves, Angus/Brangus with their top pen $1765 at 323.2c/kg for 291kg going to Greg Upton, Walcha.
Top priced pen of weaner steers made $1901.28 for 553.2c/kg from EU accredited producer Phil and Amanda Jones, Tenterfield.
Top heifer made 2046.93 from Col and Tracey Caldwell, Tenterfield.
