PIG producers from across the east coast came together at Bedgerabong last Thursday for the 5th annual Forbes Pig Sale conducted by VC Reid Livestock, Forbes.
Around 58 head went under the hammer in the multi-vendor sale that achieved a full clearance, with two Large White boars creating spirited bidding before being knocked down for the equal top price of $2000 each.
Pinedock Lakeside J903 was the Large White boar that received the Wayne Reid Trophy for the best exhibit of the sale before going on to sell for $2000.
Weighing 115 kilograms, he was offered by the Dockrill family of Pinedock, Casino, and purchased by commercial pig breeder Andrew Rawthorne, Trundle, as part of his draft that also included two joined so
Hugh and Cheryl McMahon, Tullamore picked up the other $2000 top-priced Large White boar, Gumshire King Arnie J2573, from vendor the Blenkiron family of Gumshire, Kyneton, SA.
Overall 19 boars sold from $550 to $2000, and averaged $1300. In the female offering, 36 unjoined gilts sold from $650 to $1250 and averaged $780, while 3 joined sows sold from $1250 to $1450 and averaged $1350.
The $1450 top-priced mated sow was Gumshire Queen Mary J1385, a Large White from the Gumshire stud, SA that sold to Graham Hobbs of Molong who also purchased two boars.
Landrace gilt Gumshire Moun J1740 topped the unmated gilt section selling for $1250 to Glenn and Karen Dwyer of Mt David.
Vendors were Pinedock, Casino, Gumshire, Kyneton, SA, Stockinpiggle, Stockinbingal, Clarenbrook, Placid Hills, Qld and Riverglen, Forbes.
