John Crawford of Rock-Bank Merinos was the first Victorian winner of the Australian Fleece Competition, after the early competitions were dominated by NSW studs.
Mr Crawford won in 2005 and then again in 2009.
He said the competition's charity donations was one of its impressive sides.
"It's a well run competition - it's not a matter of winning it," he said.
"A win's always a big plus but it's always great to show your fleeces against the best in the nation.
"The quality is red hot, it's the best in the country."
Rock-Bank is located in Victoria Valley in the southern Grampians and has been operating since 1881.
The stud runs about 4000 sheep and started breeding Poll Merinos about five years ago.
"The industry's changing, it ebbs and flows all the time," Mr Crawford said.
"You set your type and what suits your environment and you establish your clientele market.
"You can't totally rejig it overnight."
