Strong demand for rare store cattle in genuine condition played into the hands of producers selling through the Northern Rivers Livestock Exchange at Casino, which on Friday yarded 2981 head. Light weaner steers made up to 748 cents a kilogram and feeder steers sold to $2247.
A remarkable line of terminal Charolais over first cross Brahman/Hereford from the Fuhrmann and Cooke families, Mummulgum with the McCabe family, Crystal Creek on the Tweed, and others, sold strongly to the likes of grass finisher Greg Upton, Walcha; and to grain finisher Robert Gill from Alexander Downs, Merriwa - with both buyers applauding the versatility of this specific cross, the sun-drenched "North Coast Honeypot Gold".
Clint and Max McCabe, Crystal Creek on the Tweed sold calves to this type, 254kg for 620c/kg or $1577 going to Mr Upton.
Light Angus steers from Boyd and Leisa Holden, Old Bonalbo, sold to a top of 690c/kg for 165.7kg or $1143 while heavier calves 278.3kg made 554c/kg or $1541.
Angus heifers sold by Steve and Kathy Goldthorpe, Woodlands at Urbenville, attracted a bid of 640c/kg at 278kg to bring $1782, more than their steers at 277kg made 620c/kg or $1717.40.
Ross MacQueen, Wiangaree, sold Simmental/Charbray steers 269kg for 622c/kg or $1660.
Les and Kerryn Hellyar, Wiangaree, sold Charolais over Santa/Hereford steers 245.5kg for 602.7c/kg or $1479 to Alexander Downs, while their heifers, 247.6kg made 548.4c/kg or $1357 going to the same feedlot.
