With 1698 head offered today at NVLX Wodonga, the feature lines of Angus cows attracted a lot of attention: while the excellent run of steers suitable for backgrounding by grass finishers or feedlots were also in strong demand.
Prices for all grades of cattle is not diminishing and with good rain across the eastern parts of Victoria and NSW, purchaser's were probably anticipating an excellent spring and the market would be best described as 'fully firm' on current values.
Prices for weaner steers 300-400kg ranged from $1550 (307kg) to $1945 (377kg) while those under 300kg sold to $1740 (291kg) and yearling steers above 400kg sold to $2400 (594kg).
Heifers weighing 300-400kg sold from $1500 (320kg) to $1840 (389kg); those under 300kg sold to $1505 (293kg) and those above 400kg sold to $1830 (441kg).
Unjoined heifers sold to $1880, while PTIC heifers sold for $2240 and cows with calves sold to $3840.
Representative sales of weaner steers included eight Llandarlo-blood Angus weighing 380kg sold by Mt Elliot Grazing, Corryong, Victoria for $1920: 41 Rennylea-blood Angus, weighing 328kg sold by KA and JB Klemm, Londrigan, Vic., made $1800 and ten Charolais weighing 357kg sold by Beltana Enterprises, Gundowring, Vic, for $1830.
Heavier steers sales included eight Limousin weighing 460kg sold by T Iaria, Mt Beauty, Vic, for $2125: nine Charolais weighing 440kg sold by Cottonwoods Pty Ltd, Tallangatta, Vic., for $2085 and one Angus steer weighing 594kg sold by Riverview Dora Dora Pty Ltd, Talmalmo, Vic., for $2480.
Sales of weaner heifers included 15 Herefords weighing 336kg offered by Bryan Proctor, Indigo Valley, Vic., sold for $1650: 13 Rangan-blood Charolais weighing 367kg sold by MJ and EE Turner, Red Bluff, Vic., sold for $1790 and six Limousin weighing 343kg sold by T Iaria, Mt Beauty, Vic., for $1790.
Three Red Angus heifers, rising two years and PTIC to Moorwatha Red Angus and weighing 540kg sold for $2240 on account P and J Frankelburg, Howlong.
Scott McKimmie, Corryong, Vic., sold 15 Angus cows with first calves for $3840: while the herd dispersal for Noel Ryan, Table Top, saw at top of $3420 for 14 three-six years Angus PTIC and weighing 641kg while his pen of 16 two year PTIC Angus weighing 540kg sold for $2640.
Clive March, Tocumwal, sold 10 Prime Angus-blood second calvers, rising three years and depastured to LBW bull for $2600.
Commission agents and feedlot buyers were very strong with competition coming from restockers in north-east Victoria and southern Riverina.
