Some very good annual drafts of weaners were the feature at Thursday's store cattle sale at Northern Victoria Livestock Exchange near Wodonga when 1329 head were yarded.
Limited numbers of breeding females were on offer and heavy steers and heifers were in short supply, and the quality of the yarding was described as "outstanding" and not surprising given the good season in north-eastern Victoria.
Prices for the better lines were very strong on current sales, while those lesser quality cattle were a little harder to sell.
Steers weighing 300kg to 400kg sold from $1615 (318kg) to $1960 (352kg); while those less than 300kg sold to $1760 (290kg) and those more than 400kg sold from $1890 to $2300 when Alfred Camiller, Talbalk, Victoria, offered two Angus.
Heifers weighing 300kg to 400kg sold from $1500 (318kg) to $1800 (375kg): while those under 300kg topped at $1640 (283kg) and those over 400kg sold from $1850 to $2000 when CT and CM Packer, Bethanga, Vic., offered three Angus weighing 435kg.
PTIC females sold to $2960 when RT Hooper, Docker, Vic, penned 10 five year old Angus PTIC to Dunoon-bred bulls and weighing 663kg, while cows with calves sold to $3275.
Some representative sales of steers 300kg to 400kg range included 40 Angus, 10 months and weighing 352kg sold by Ray Vinge, Berrimgama, Vic., for $1960: 14 ten-month Angus weighing 335kg sold by Brian Mahoney, Mansfield, Vic., for $1910 and $1850 for eight Limousin cross, nine - ten months and weighing 356kg when offered by IH and SW Price, Sandy Creek, Vic.
Sales of steers over 400kg included five Angus weighing 440kg sold by Rodney Lofflier, Sandy Creek, for $2200: 12 Herefords weighing 446kg sold by DH and MA Threthowan, Cookardinia, for $2170 and eight Shorthorns offered by Alfred Camiller, Talbalk, Vic, weighing 471kg sold for $2180.
Steers under 300kg sold for $1760 when Brian Mahoney, Mansfield penned 15 nine-ten month Angus weighing 290kg: Mark Draper, Castle Creek, Vic., received $1735 for his pen of 12 eight-nine month Angus weighing 291kg and nine Angus weighing 285kg offered by GD and WA Heiner, Running Creek, Vic., sold for $1700.
In the heifer pens weighing 300kg to 400kg, GA and VM Redding, Khancoban, sold four Angus weighing 375kg for $1800: IH and SW Price, Sandy Creek, Vic., sold for 12 Limousin weighing 333kg for $1685 and Barabool Pastoral Co, Mudgegonga, Vic., sold 11 Angus nine to 10 months weighing 328kg for $1745.
Heifers under 300kg sold for $1640 when CT and CM Packer, Bethanga, Vic., offered 19 10-12 month Angus weighing 283kg: RT Hooper, Docker, Vic., sold 11 eight-nine month Angus weighing 299kg for $1610 and Raymond Andrews, Mansfield, Vic., sold 13 nine-ten month Angus weighing 272kg for $1535.
Heifers over 400kg included two Angus weighing 448kg offered by HM Shipard, Bungowannah, sold for $1900.
Sales of pregnancy-tested-in-calf females included $2300 for seven rising two year Angus, PTIC to Paringa Angus LBW bull sold by Matta nd Kristy McMahon, Carlyle, Vic., for $2300: while four mixed-age Simmental cows with calves sold on account EW Almond, Wagga Wagga, for $3275 and three unjoined Angus cows with calves sold on account H Meers, Jindera, for $2400.
Restockers from local areas were giving strong competition from feedlot interests along with buyers from Coonamble, Quirindi and Wagga Wagga.
The sale was conducted by Wodonga-based agents, BUR, Schubert Boers, Peter Ruaro Livestock and Corcoran Parker.
