At their annual spring bull sale, Ian and Cathy Darmody, Burbong Angus, Bungendore, sold 12 of the 13 two-year-old bulls offered at auction for a top of $15,000 and an average of $8633, which was an increase of $2678 on the last sale.
The $15,000 top-priced bull was Burbong Q92, a Raff Midland Z204 grandson with a frame score of 7.2, that weighed 995 kilograms with real sire potential.
Bought through Peter Cabot, Nutrien Wagga Wagga, Q92 had a great head carriage and was smooth-skinned with figures of +104 for 400-day and +152 for 600-day weight. He measured a scrotal circumference of 42 centimetres, an eye muscle area (EMA) of 115 square centimetres and an intramuscular fat (IMF) of 6.5 per cent.
Mr Cabot also purchased Burbong Q82 for $11,000. A grandson of Dunoon Galilee G682, with a frame score of 7.8, he weighed 970kg with figures of +90 for 400-day and +127 for 600-day weights, a scrotal measurement pf 42cm testicles, an EMA of 115 sq cm and an IMF of 6.5pc.
The second top-priced bull at $12,000 was Burbong Q50, a grandson of Granite Ridge 4D7, which sold to Tooma Station, Tooma, through Gerard Ryan, BUR, Albury.
Weighing 1000kg, the frame score 7.6 bull had figures of +61 for 200-day and +152 for 600-day weights, and measured a 40cm scrotal circumference, an 119 sq cm EMA and an IMF of 4.9pc. Burbong Q50 was described as a real star lot, super quiet, smooth skinned and soft.
At $10,000 the third top-priced bull was Burbong Q34, bought by Lee McColl of Tooma who also purchased Burbong Q2 for $9000.
His new sire was a 7.6 frame score quiet bull which weighed 965kg, with a 39cm scrotal measurement and an IMF of 6.5pc.
Ian Darmody said all bulls presented extremely well under such cold and wet conditions. "Just goes to show that extra weight for you steers and heifers is extra money in the bank and these bulls will produce progeny that will perform," he said.
The Helmsman auction was settled by Nutrien, Goulburn.
