THERE was spirited bidding as good lines of cows with calves were offered during the monthly store cattle sale at Dunedoo last Friday.

Prices across the steer and heifer categories were also up by more than $150 a head, according to Milling Stuart auctioneer Jamie Stuart, Dunedoo.

Agents Milling Stuart, Dunedoo, and PT Lord, Dakin and Associates, Dubbo, yarded 1000 cattle attracting a large gallery of local buyers and those from as far afield as Orange, Forbes and the Hunter Valley.

Weaner steers sold from $1200 to $2050 a head, while the best yearling steers fetched $2320 (up from $2100 on September 15).

Len and Sheila Hood, Cassilis, sold the top pen of 12- to 14-month-old Santa Gertrudis steers for $2330 .

Weaner heifers sold from $900 to $1700, and yearling heifers ranged from $1900 to $2300, up from $1920 on September 15.

In the mix were eight- to 10-month-old Charolais and Hereford agistment heifers, sold by Davis Agriculture to a top of $1460. The Martin family, Nardoo, Cassilis, also sold Hereford yearling heifers for $2020.

Len and Sheila Hood also sold a draft of two-year-old unjoined Santa Gertrudis heifers for $2500.

A small number of pregnancy-tested-in-calf heifers sold from $2200 to $3025. The best of those were a pen of two-year-old Charolais-cross heifers PTIC to an Angus bull.

They were sold by John and Julie Hunter, Mendooran.

Demand for cows with calves soared. Most sold between $2350 and $4020.

Topping the market were a pen of Angus cows with calves sold by IA and WR Rushton, Dubbo, for $4020 a unit.

Allana and Gig Bowman, Shingle Hut, Dunedoo, sold two-year-old Charolais-cross calves with Angus calves for a pricey $3980.

Willow Bend Partnership, Dubbo, sold Angus cows with two- to three-month-old calves by Block Rock Angus bulls for $3775.

The sale was conducted by Milling Stuart, Dunedoo, and PT Lord, Dakin and Associates, Dubbo.
