THE Eastern Young Cattle Indicator may be grabbing the headlines again with another record-breaking run, but it's the Medium Weight Steer Indicator for NSW cattle that caught my attention on Tuesday.
It's fallen nearly 80 cents a kilogram (liveweight) in the past week, according to Meat and Livestock Australia data.
That puts it at 455c/kg in NSW.
Taking a closer look at the MLA data from a regional perspective, it seems to be the Central West where the market has really slipped.
The Central West average for medium steers was 430c/kg, which was nearly 100c/kg lower than the Southern NSW average.
In contrast, feeder steer prices remain strong and this week averaged 552c/kg, while restocker yearlings moved up to an average of nearly 720c/kg.

Lamb campaign wins gold Effie
MEAT and Livestock Australia's Make Lamb Not Walls campaign has been awarded a number of accolades at Effie Australia's online ceremony, including gold in the Outsmarting COVID category.
The Effie Awards are among the most distinguished awards in the Australian marketing communications industry.
The awards honour effectiveness in advertising and marketing communications.
The campaign also won silver for the Return on Investment category; silver for Food, Confectionery and Snacks category, and bronze in the Insight and Strategic Thinking category.
MLA general manager for marketing and insights Nathan Low said the industry continued to reap the benefits of the success from the Make Lamb Not Walls campaign.
"The campaign generated outstanding results across the board, including a 16.8 per cent uplift in sales during the period, 1421 total pieces of coverage and over 10 million views," he said.
"The Outsmarting COVID award is a category for effectiveness studies that help contribute to marketing knowledge during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the first Australian recession since 1990.
"Australian Lamb won a Gold Effie for its response to a pandemic extinguishing Australia's unity and BBQs. We combined an enduring brand strategy and culturally provocative idea to encourage Australians to break down state borders and reunite over a lamb BBQ."
