The inaugural ABCRA affiliated Elders Killara campdraft at Quipoly via Quirindi is set for a busy two and a half days from November 12. Nearly a thousand runs will have double-vaccinated riders competing for $27,000 in prize money. All profits will be donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and other charities.
Demand from a keen campdrafting community locked out of the family-friendly sport for months has been "overwhelming" according to organiser and Killara feedlot operations manager David Barnes who said the hard part has been culling 1700 entries - from Wagga Wagga to Grafton - down to 900 with priority given to district supporters and sponsors of the event.
This inaugural draft will feature a new arena, part of the extensive yards used by Killara to background cattle for their 20,000 head feedlot. More than 4000 tonnes of top soil was brought in just for the arena, and afterwards laser-levelled.
The second event will run over three days in May, with all proceeds going to charity.
