LANDHOLDERS in the Tenterfield, Walcha, and Delungra areas will have the chance to get down and dirty with experts at a series of soil health and production field days hosted by the Northern Tablelands Local Land Services.
The field days will look at understanding the physical, chemical and biological components of the soil and how they interact.
"To maintain optimum soil health and maximise production from pastures, crops and livestock it is important to understand your soil", said LLS officer Beth Brown.
"Landholders will be shown methods of assessing their soil health in the paddock as well as how to take soil samples for laboratory testing for key components such as nutrients, pH, salinity and organic matter.
"The impact of soil health on farm production will also be discussed, including how to identify symptoms of soil deficiency in stock, pastures and crops, and how better soil management can improve productivity."
Field Day participants will be offered two free laboratory soil tests per family or farm business so they can find out more about the soil health on their property. Participants will be invited to a follow-up soil test interpretation workshop once the results are back from the laboratory.
The field days are at "Boree", Walcha, on March 30, "Nordale", Delungra, on March 31, and "Karlybrook", Tenterfield, on April 1.
