SALEYARD operators and staff from across the national gathered in Cairns, Queensland, this week for the annual Australian Livestock Marketing Association (ALMA) conference and expo.
After several years of planning and discussion, delegates will have the opportunity to fine tune the ALMA Code of Practice.
It will be a guiding document for saleyard managers and workers to help them achieve the standards required for health and safety and animal welfare in saleyards.
The aim is that all people directly involved with livestock handling should be conversant with the Australian saleyards model code of practice.
During this morning’s conference a number of saleyard managers from across Australia updated delegates on the season, market trends and condition of stock moving through saleyards.
Delegates have also heard from Frontier International Ag senior trader Tony Gooden regarding the export of live cattle to South East Asia.
The conference wraps up on Thursday night with a gala dinner where the recipient of the Livestock Exchange Saleyards Award for Excellence will be announced.
