ANYTHING requiring blind devotion is also known as a juggernaut, so the buyers of the aptly named Angus bull Prime Juggernaut J15 (AI) for $41,000 last week might have had that in mind as the bidding crept higher during the sale.

It was certainly Juggernaut that stole the show at last week's Eighth Annual Prime Angus Yearling Bull Sale in Victoria and the $41,000 price tag was believed to be a Australian record price for a yearling.
Prime Angus principals Peter and Annick Butterfield, Warrenbayne, said the bull was bought by a syndicate (which included Anvil Angus from Acheron in Victoria, High Country Heifers and Australian Livestock Genetic Investments, Little Meadows Angus in WA) following a spirited five-way contest during the sale.
Juggernaut, or Juggs for short, is a Tuwharetoa Regent D145 (AI) (ET) BNAD145 son from Prime Lowan F20 (AI) CXBF20.
His impressive Breedplan figures include a long-fed index of 178 which puts him among the highest-ranked bulls to be offered in Australia.
He has an eye-muscle area estimated breeding value (EBV) of +11.1sq cm, compared to the breed average of +4.2sq cm, intra muscular fat of +4.3 per cent, compared to +1.3pc for breed average, 400-day weight of +93kg compared to +75kg and 600-day weight of +120kg, compared to +94kg for breed average.
A second Regent son, J31 sold for $10,000. The sale averaged $4593 with 29 of the 30 bulls sold.
"Our small but savvy band of repeat customers have grown used to the idea of buying 12-month-old bulls," Mrs Butterfield said.
"They understand a little more care is required but that it is a longer term investment in genetics which can really pay dividends.
"We breed primarily for the long fed market so marbling and other carcase traits are high on the priority list."
