Push off Pamplona - the running of the bulls has got nothing on the strutting of the sheep in Camden, south of Sydney.
Camden came alive on Wednesday when 260 sheep strutted their stuff to kick off the local show which starts on Friday, March 20.
Camden Show Society president Hough Southwell said locals, including 900 school children, got into the show spirit lining the streets for the sheep run, in anticipation for opening day on Friday.
“It’s been a thrill to kickstart the show droving the sheep through the streets of Camden, and very fitting given the Camden region is the birth place of the Australian wool industry,” Mr Southwell said.
In 1801 Camden became home to the first purebred Merino sheep exported to Australia.
On Wednesday, the sheep mob was driven from Town Farm through suburban Camden to the showground.
“We’re celebrating 129 years of the Camden Show this year, and after all that time we’re proud to still be a true country show, so close to the city.”
