AUGUST-shorn Merinos graced the mat for day one of the Great Southern Supreme Show and Sale in Canberra on Saturday.
Wool type accolades were shared among the studs, with the Clonan family’s Alfoxton Merinos, Armidale, taking the biggest haul of four champion sashes.
Georgina Wallace, Trefusis stud, Ross, Tasmania, awarded an Alfoxton exhibit the champion August-shorn superfine wool ram award, while Peter Capel, Bungulla stud, Manilla, gave another of Alfoxton ram the champion August-shorn fine/medium wool ribbon.
Alfoxton also won the champion Poll Merino superfine wool ram and Poll Merino fine wool ram awards, as well as the champion fine wool ewe sash, all in the August-shorn section.
Langdene stud, Dunedoo, took home a bunch of broad ribbons, exhibiting both the August-shorn champion and reserve champion fine wool rams, judged by Warren Russell, Melrose Merinos, Nurrabiel, Victoria, as well as champion fine/medium ewe, and reserve ram in the same section.
In the strong wools, also judged by Mr Capel, Towalba Merinos, Peak Hill, exhibited August-shorn champion medium/strong wool ram, with Roseville Park stud, Dubbo, in reserve.
Coddington Uardry Poll, Yeoval, exhibits were awarded August-shorn champion Poll Merino fine/medium ram, and Poll Merino medium/strong wool ram.
Day two will kick off on Sunday with the grand champion August-shorn ram judging, followed by the long wool March-shorn judging.
