A STRATEGIC business move has meant AusWest Seeds now has a physical presence in the North West of the state after buying a portion of Grainland, Moree.
AusWest Seeds purchased Grainland's cereal seed grading plant and has been operating it since early August.
AusWest Seeds National Sales and Marketing Manager, Peter Johnson, said Grainland would compliment AusWest's operations that are already exist in the north, making pasture and cereal seed more accessible to clients in the area.
The rural based business has been around for nearly 60 years, with its main office in Forbes NSW.
The business operates in both NSW and Queensland as a wholesaler, selling high quality seed to rural retail stores.
Both Grainland and AusWest Seeds have been involved in the production and multiplication of cereal seed for breeding companies such as Seednet, Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) and Pacific Seeds in the past.
Mr Johnson said Grainland was a great fit for their business as it replicated AusWest’s cereal seed business in Forbes.
Mr Johnson said when Grainland came on the market, it made sense to purchase it as it would help them achieve their strategic goal of expanding in the northern area.
"The difficulties with cereal seed is it needs to be grown, cleaned and sold in a confined geographical area," he said.
"We needed a base to grow, process and distribute from in northern NSW."
Currently, AusWest Seeds has seven territory managers, a sales manager and a product development manager based throughout Forbes, Moree, Armidale and Brisbane.
Mr Johnson said all staff from the section of Grainland purchased by AusWest Seeds were retained.
Although it's still early days for AusWest Seeds in Moree, Mr Johnson said they're looking to consolidate how they can use their presence in the north west to better service their clients.
"That includes warehousing pasture products in Moree to provide our local clients with access to products quickly," he said.
