A CONVERSATION with your neighbour could minimise off target spray drift says Tubbo Irrigation manager John Durham, Coleambally.
During the week before Christmas, off target spray drift from phenoxy chemicals caused damage to all 970 ha of Mr Durham’s irrigated cotton.
Although Mr Durham said he hoped the cotton would grow out of the damage, the spray drift could prolong the cotton season, leaving the crop exposed to rain damage.
“The crop is fruiting at the moment,” he said.
“It’s too early in the season to know if the spray drift will have a financial impact on the business.”
Mr Durham said whilst no one could determine the weather, there were things farmers and spray contractors could do to minimise the risk of spray drift.
“You just need to be aware and communicate with your neighbours,” he said.
“Let them know you’re looking to use volatile chemicals and your spraying times.”
