NORTHERN buyers made the day at Wodonga on the second day of the all breeds sale.
Corcoran Parker, Elders and Landmark offered a large offering of 5293 steers and heifers form very young calves through to yearlings.
Competition was strong with local producers left in the wake of buyers from the north, representing clients from Dubbo, Forbes, Mudgee, Gunnedah, Gundagai, Moree, Warren and southern Queensland.
Estimates of cattle heading to these areas reached 80 per cent of the yarding.
Buyers of feeder steers dominated early, while backgrounders and finishers controlled the market for lighter weight cattle.
McKoy and Sons Pastoral Co, Ohio, Holbrook, sold a run of 151 yearling Hereford steers from $1405 to $1580, 305-334 cents a kilogram live weight.
Other yearlings sold between $1075, and the top price with some of the lighter weights equalling 354c/kg.
Competition came to the fore in the weaner section, although plenty of the cattle were not weaned.
Brackview, Benalla, sold 21 steers to $1360, and most of the steers, 320-380kg lwt, sold from $1150-$1280, equalling 320-368c/kg lwt.
Very young, lightweight and plain steers sold from $640-$905, equalling 345-390c/kg for most.
Many of these went to Warren after selling to strong competition. Local district buyers generally missed out on buying as the competition was too strong.
Heifers were a different story with a good number of the heavier heifers, yearlings and weaners, heading north, mostly for grain feeding. These sold from $900 to $1190, or 265c/kg to 308c/kg lwt.
European breed heifers and their crosses sold to strong feeder competition, and liveweight prices equalled 290c/kg to 335c/kg, averaging about 310c/kg lwt.
Well bred, and good quality heifers 260-360kg lwt, sold between $750&$1150, to equal 285-320c/kg, and averaging about 302c/kg. All in all this was a strong market with prices mostly equal compared to each day with quality variations allowing for most changes.
