WALGETT farmer Jim O’Brien has been registering his trailers in Queensland for years.
“We were paying an arm and a leg in NSW for rego and decided to lodge some in Queensland to cut down on costs,” said Mr O’Brien, “Euroka” (whose son Patrick is pictured on our front cover with farm manager Bob Connor).
“In NSW a tri-axle trailer costs about $1900 to register for 12 months and it requires annual inspection. In Queensland they get inspected every second year and its cost about $500.
“My trailers aren’t running up and down the highway.”
Mr O’Brien can provide proof of a Queensland address. He has three trucks which pull two road trains and a B-double. Not all his trailers are registered interstate.
Livestock and Bulk Carriers Association director, Robert Gunning, agreed there was a disparity in primary producer concessions between states, but said there was more to registering a truck than just a trailer.
