TWO mares with cutting foundations achieved the equal top price of $70,000 twice at the Landmark Classic Sale on the weekend.
In the three-day sale, 507 of the 550 horses offered were sold for an average of $13,431.
Sophie Duck, a four-year-old mare by Sophisticated Catt from Oaks Special Duckling, was sold by Queensland horseman John Brekelmans, Rockhampton, to Wally Rea, ”The Overflow”, Marlborough.
Dungowan breeder and trainer Hugh Miles sold his four-year-old mare Dual Again, by Teles Again from Dual N Boonsmal, for $70,000 to the Elliott Cattle Company, Corfield, Queensland.
Cameron and Sarah Parker, Alton Downs, Queensland, sold Jayem Snipellieta, a seven-year-old mare by Acres Destiny from Jayem Ellieta, to Toonga Pastoral Company, Wagga Wagga, for $68,000.
A new record was set for two-year-old fillies when Walcha breeders Bruce and Julie McNaughton sold Acres Lullaby, by Acres Destiny from Tassas Sweet Song, for $60,000 to Ted and Sherri Fogarty, Woolbrook.
Horses from more than 300 studs were in the sale, which attracted 900 registered bidders from across the country and grossed nearly $7 million.
Landmark Equine sales specialist Joel Fleming, Tamworth, said there was strong support from buyers in Queensland and NSW, but horses went to every state in Australia.
“The biggest demand was for the lines of horses that are by proven campdraft sires and performance mares,” Mr Fleming said.
“The horses with cutting foundations do well in the sale, but few of them go back to cutting – it’s more about campdrafting.”
