TWELVE thousand dollars was the top money paid at Glenellerslie Herefords 23rd annual on-property helmsman sale at Adelong last Tuesday.
The Smith family cleared 36 of the 45 bulls offered to average $4486 across the draft.
Broken down into 28 of the 31 dehorned bulls offered selling for an average of $4589 and top of $12000, while eight of the 14 poll bulls offered sold to $9500 and averaged $4125.
George Hardcastle, McPherson Herefords, Casino, purchased Glenellerslie Outstanding for the top price of $12,000 through Elders stud stock representative Jim Bruce.
The 24-month-old Bingeberry Trailblazer E048 son from the Carnation cow family expressed phenotype having the largest average daily gain (ADG), biggest eye muscle area (EMA), and highest intra-muscular fat percentage of the bulls offered.
Elders stud stock agent Jim Bruce said that Mr Hardcastle wanted a horned bull to utilise in his stud and had returned to Glenellerslie after purchasing an $8000 sire last year and being happy with how the bull had performed.
The top price poll sire Glenellerslie Outright by Debarry Chisel was purchased by Phillip (Bluey) Commins of Nunniong Herefords, Ensay, Victoria, for $9500.
R.A. and M.H. Trethowan, “Lindawarra”, Cookardinia, fought hard for their two bulls - a poll bull for $9250 and a dehorned bull for $8000.
Ross Trethowan who has been purchasing bulls at Glenellerslie for 10 years said the Glenellerslie bulls were true to type honest bulls that did what you wanted them too and that represented good value.
Among the volume purchasers were J.A.P., W.J. and S.J. Webb, “Califat”, Adelong, who purchased three bulls for their grass fed grown steer production system to average $3583.
Roche Rural Holdings, “Yavendale”, Adelong, purchased three bulls to a top of $3250, while Tim and Charlie Woodgate, Buchan, Victoria, purchased two bulls to average $4000.
Rob Webb, R.J. and R.J. Webb, Tumut, who has been buying Glenellerslie bulls since prior to the annual sale and turn calves off as grown grass fed steers, purchased poll bull Glenellerslie Oswald for $5250.
Glenellerslie principal Ross Smith said it was a “bloody wonderful sale” and was happy to know the Hereford breed was still alive and well.
The helmsman sale was conducted by agents in conjunction Elders Rural Services and Glassers Total Sales Management, with Michael Glasser adjudicating.
