SYDENY Royal legend awardee in 2010, Charlie Shearer, has returned to the Dairy cattle arena this time winning the senior champion female in the Brown Swiss breed through good friend and fellow breeder Max Wake of Benleigh Brown Swiss, Singleton.
Mr Shearer may be better known for his impact in the Holstein section with Wyoming Holsteins, but said after the next generation came along took their places, he wanted something to continue with in the Dairy cattle scene.
“I went to Max and bought some Brown Swiss about five years ago; he houses them at Benleigh for me,” Mr Shearer said.
His senior champion, Benleigh Jetway Sasha initially won her over five not over six years in milk class, was then sashed best senior udder before eventually being crowned senior champ.
Reserve champion also went to the Benleigh camp with Benleigh Goblet Carol and was described by judge, Alexandra Walker, Inverloch, as “a cow that should be admired”.
But it was Sasha that took Ms Walker’s eye foremost.
“The really uniformed group has cows that have calved from two to four calfs, that ranged from three to six-years-old,” Ms Walker said.
“The champion line-up showed cows with a lot of capacity through their frames, they showed good milking udders, they have lovely strength and dairyness that I look for.
“The champion was a cow with a lot of balance, a lot of correctness, beautiful capacity through her ribs and had an advantage over the reserve with her teat size and placement.”
Honourable mention in the senior section went to a six year-old, Curramore Carol Sealion, also shown by Max and Robyn Wake.
Continuing their dominance in the Brown Swiss, the Wake family also won the intermediate champion female with Cooltah Blooming Stacey, which also won the best intermediate udder.
Ms Walker described Stacey as having great width and maturity through her udder.
Reserve went to Benleigh Brookings Victoria 2nd who placed second to Stacey in their class and honourable mention was Benleigh Goldwyn Peggy.
Junior champion female was awarded to Benleigh Denver Gredel, again exhibited by Max and Robyn Wake with reserve going to Miss Zacco Robina exhibited by Tim Wilson and Kate Forbes, Gloucester.
Cliftonvale Jongleur Marlie, shown by Mr Shearer was named honourable mention.
The most successful exhibitor in the Brown Swiss breed was aptly won by the Wake family, Singleton.
