RESENTFUL and defeated. That’s how the majority of rural Australians feel when they turn on their computers.
Whether they’re banking, researching or auctioning stock online, internet drop outs are a daily, business-crippling occurrence for too many people.
Whether it’s ADSL, wireless broadband or satellite – the vast majority of rural Australians can’t use the internet they pay for and it’s not good enough.
Many of the farmers and small business owners The Land spoke to for this week’s coverage didn’t complain about the price nor the speed of their internet. They wanted a reliable connection.
“Bad internet is better than no internet,” said one frustrated woman.
When asked, many said they’d given up complaining. But in the absence of consumer protections to obligate mobile data and internet providers to compensate customers if they don’t deliver, keeping quiet won’t help.
It’s time to hit the phones again. Contact the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman and your local Member of Parliament because every complaint logged on the public record counts.
