RED ANGUS bulls topped at $14,000 to stud and commercial herds in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania during the 17th annual Red Angus National Show and Sale at Dubbo showground last week when 14 of 22 bulls sold for a 67 per cent auction clearance to average $6286.
As well, 13 stud females topped $5000 four times to averaged $3654. Last year 16 bulls averaged $5500 and eight females $3688.
Purchased purely for his muscle content, the 26 month-old Wollumbi Fat Tony K210 weighing 948 kilograms was bought by Anthony and Helen Ferris, “Abergeldie”, Barraba, for their Charolais and Red Angus crossbreeding operation producing weaners annually for Gunnedah’s weaner sale.
Fat Tony was one of two bulls shown by new Red Angus breeders Richard and Lyn Crookes, Yallambee stud of some 80 breeders at Sutton Forest managed by David Croker.
The bull has an eye muscle area (EMA) of 133 square centimetres and scrotal circumference of 45cm.
Mr Ferris said he liked the second placegetter in the oldest class for its muscling.
“He’s a very heavily muscled bull for Red Angus and he will go back over Charolais/Angus cross cows.”
The Crookes also gained $7000 for the 20-22 months classwinner Wollumbi Felix (Twin) (AI) when bought by Webb and Woodiwiss Livestock, Whitemore, Tasmania.
