Highlights from the first day of Northern Beef Week. For the full schedule of which studs are open and when click here.

Glen Innes stud Dance Angus welcomed about 20 visitors to "Carribber" on day one of Northern Beef Week, despite wet weather. The stud had 60 bulls and 15 joined heifers on show, with all cattle to be offered at the on-property sale on August 8. It is a family operation of Eric and Helen Turnham with Laiton and Kayla Turnham since 1996. On June 27 during Northern Beef Week, 44 Speckle Park bulls and 55 Speckle Park females were on show in preparation for their annual on-property sale on Monday July 11. Visitor number increased throughout the day, despite the difficult weather conditions.

Beginning in 1973, Richard Mackenzie has a long tradition of breeding Hereford cattle and decided to participate in Northern Beef Week four years ago with his daughter and son in-;law Herb Mackenzie, Seaforth Angus, Guyra. On show for potential clients were 11 rising two-year-old Hereford bulls in preparation for the joint on-property sale at Seaforth Angus, Guyra, on Monday July 18.


Herb and Lucy Mackenzie, Seaforth Angus, Guyra. Beginning the stud seven years ago to bring new Angus genetics into the area, Herb and Lucy offered 31 rising two-year-old bulls on day one of Northern Beef Week. A continuous flow of visitors attended their open day to view the high quality bulls who will go up for sale at the Seaforth Angus on property auction on Monday July 18. 

Matthew Friend, Jenny Friend and two sons, Ben friend (pictured), operate Froghollow Limousin stud, Black Mountain. Breeding commercially relevant black and apricot Limousin cattle since 1996, the two-time Northern Beef Week participants offered 23 rising two year old bulls for sale on Monday June 27, with numerous returning clients purchasing a total of seven bulls. 


Nicholas and Karen Morgan, Glenmorgan Angus, Llangothlin with Jason Sutherland, Ausmectin national sales manager, Bundanoon. More than 50 potential clients visited Glenmorgan Angus, Llangothlin, to view 31 yearling Angus bulls and 31 commercial bulls. A total of 32 commercial bulls were sold on day one of Northern Beef Week to both new and existing clients, with the 31 yearlings to go up for sale at Glenmorgan Angus’s first on-property sale on Wednesday September 7.


Stud principal Andrew White with daughters Evey White and Eliza White, Eastern Plains Angus, Guyra. With one hundred years of history in breeding cattle, the family operated stud showed 69 of their top bulls who will go up for sale at their on-property sale on Tuesday July 26. More than 30 visitors attended the opening day to view the quality genetics achieved at Eastern Plains Angus.


Stud principal, Roderick Binny, Glenlea Charolais, Guyra, and stud assistant Josh Stackman, Armidale. On show for interested clients were 30 bulls including a selection of yearlings and two to three year old bulls. Visitors included new and retuning clients selling two bulls. Glenlea Charolais will present 15 bulls at the inaugural European Breeders Sale at Tenterfield instead of a 2016 on-property sale. 

Thornleigh Herefords stud principal Ben Monie welcomed more than 20 visitors to "North Torrakina", Little Plain, on day one of Northern Beef Week. On display were about 40 bulls, to be offered in the annual on-property sale on August 22. Mr Monie and his mother Jennifer Monie are pictured with David Hann, Courallie J Herefords, John Kimmince, "Redbank", Mt Russell and Phil Thomas, "Kylandee", Elsmore.

Visitors to Sara Park Angus viewed 41 sale bulls at "Rutherglen", Wellingrove, on day one of Northern Beef Week. Stud principal Herb Duddy said there was a good run of visitors prior to the stud's on-property sale on July 29. Inverell stud YH Genetics made its Northern Beef Week debut on day one of the event. Visitors to "Bannockburn" were able to view bulls for private sale as well as commercial Hereford cattle. Eaglehawk Angus, Glen Innes, had 76 bulls on display on day one of Northern Beef Week. The stud had about 20 visitors by lunchtime and will sell all bulls at their August 4 on-property sale. Stud principal Ian Vivers is pictured with repeat stud clients Chris, Mercia, Adriana and Chris Theron, Kyogle.

Medlyn Angus, Lismore, had several repeat buyers visit at its open day on agisted country at Black Swamp east of Tenterfield. Owner John Gibson said the 30 Angus bulls on offer were looking better than expected after a very dry summer. Repeat buyer Midge Thompson, manager for Graeme and Ellen Kroll at Nanango, Queensland, said he had great success with his progeny from using Medlyn bulls on his lighter forest country. “The bulls adapt well,” he said. “They always produce very good saleable calves.”

Manager Darren Battistuzzi said his 30 bulls were proof of their do-ability given that the past summer was the worst in the last 14 years at the Richardson family’s granite country station west of Tenterfield. Based on Booroomooka cows and using bulls from Sara Park, Nairn Park and Ball Blair, Inglebrae has produced stud bulls since 2010 and Mr Battistuzzi says his successful commercial herd is proof that Inglebrae bulls stand up to scrutiny. “We don’t select on figures first,” he says. “We select on structure and temperament. Our bulls are soft, easy-doing and are deep with spring of rib.” Pictured: Stud manager Kelly Battistuzzi, front, with members of the Richardson family - Christea and Michael Ashleigh, Marie, Justin, Liz and Zac Lemberg.

Greg and Joanne Wright, and family, had a successful open day at their fourth-generation Devon stud west of Glencoe with 50 visitors calling in to say g’day. Bulls sold to $6500 to clients from Old Koreelah, North Star, Gloucester and Dorrigo. Greg says he has considered other breeds but when he does his sums he dismisses the idea. “The environment here bashes them around but they thrive and cycle again. They get back in calf without assistance,” he says. “And with feedlots offering $3.50/kg for Devons at the moment why would you look at anything else?” Greg is pictured in the back with his children William, Isabelle, Patrick and Jessica.

Quality Herefords have graced the light granite-basalt country around Mt Mitchell, on the headwaters of the Clarence east of Glencoe for two generations but these days the herd shines with an infusion of line one genetics. Belinda and Mike Norton, pictured, have recently returned from a trip to Montana to see Holden Herefords on the ground and say they are amazed at the improvement in their herd’s muscle score over the past five years by importing Holden genetics and using Ironbark bulls. “I would say my cattle have improved over that time discounting the rise on the beef market,” said Mike.

The Hancock family have been breeding Red Poll for the past 15 years at Kookabookra east of Glencoe and appreciate the breed’s excellent temperament, its fertility and calving ease, its maternal traits and its ability to produce quality beef. The evidence is proven with the Hancock family entering a Red Poll steer in Casino Beef Week’s carcass competition and receiving a dressed percentage of 63 per cent. Pictured are Albert Hancock and his daughter Rachel, who is now family stud manager with their 21 months old bull ‘Banjo’ which will appear on the show circuit this year.
