And much of that innovation comes from farmers in the field, seeking to nut out answers to age-old problems.
The tough challenges of digging holes for fence poles has inspired many tools and post drivers over the years.
Now, a father-and-son team of inventors, Sam and Jakob Quattromani, from Horsley Wholesale in Sydney, have developed the post driver to beat all – the Boss Driver.
It’s a Honda-powered four-stroke post digger for driving end assemblies of up to 100 millimetre nominal bore pipe.
Sam came up with the idea and started research and development two years ago.
Jakob, now 18, is a third-year apprentice machinist, who did a lot of the machining on parts in-house.
“It takes it to a one-person operation,” Sam said.
“That’s the main reason I built it. It reduces the amount of room needed on the back of ute to 600 square millimetres and you can do the end assembly yourself and be out fencing where nobody bothers you.”

Sam’s wife Meagan, who is also involved in the business, said they started with small post drivers and the drivers got bigger and bigger between, from the Jackaroo to the Boss.
They launched the Boss Driver at Mudgee Field Days last month, displaying it with a hoist, and will showcase it at AgQuip.
The Boss Driver retails for $3800.
