IN THE approach to this Australia Day, The Land put the call out to its online followers to share some of their favourite Australian products as well as going around the team at The Land to see what people came up with.
The idea was to get people to have a fresh think about where their dollars are going, what they serve up for dinner, or wear to work. The Land’s editor, Andrew Norris, is, himself, an avid supporter of Australian grown, and made, and through the years has earned a reputation (much to the annoyance of previous flat mates) as a label reader while grocery shopping, often putting it back where he found it, if it wasn’t Australian enough.
We might officially celebrate being Australian for one day a year, but it’s the other 364 days as we go about our lives that we can make the biggest difference.
Our label reading editor does so through such actions as buying Australian cotton, wearing wool socks every day (except if the occasion requires pluggers) and buying Australian grown food. However, his latest favourite item – despite the heat – is a Toorallie woollen jumper, which he got for Christmas. No doubt it will be put to the test come winter in Orange.
Among The Land’s team, an interesting mix came up. They included markets analyst Karen Bailey, Orange, choosing Little Big Dairy milk from Dubbo; the paper’s livestock editor Kristen Frost, Crookwell, going for Alpha-H Liquid Gold, a moisturiser made by a company at Oxenford in Queensland; senior journalist, John Ellicott, Kogarah, with some grouper cutlets from a his favourite Hurstville shop – he looks for the choicest Australian fresh seafood; The Land’s Tamworth regional reporter Ruth Schwager picked out her Angus Barrett leather belt, picked up while covering field days last year.
Our Facebook friends have added a few good ones as well, among them are Jay Newell with Nerada tea; Diane Bee with Wattle Grove Alpacas yarn; Tracy Saul supporting Akubra hats; Vicky Lee with Ray's Traditional Homemade Plum Pudding; and Diane Boardman with Skye Park horse rugs.
