WEANERS sold to strong demand from restockers, backgrounders and lotfeeders at the first sale at Inverell for the year last Thursday.
The 2700-head yarding of mostly good quality weaners reached a top of 443 cents a kilogram and $1497 a head.
The 2043 steers averaged 413.8c/kg or $1175.80, while the 656 heifers averaged 363.7c/kg or $947.14.
Inverell agent Ben Lehman, Lehman Stock and Property, said the market was on par with the strong weaner sales in the region over the past week, but weaners were making up to 100c/kg more than at the same sale last year.
Lightweight steers weighing from 200kg to 230kg sold from 380c/kg to 443c/kg, middleweight steers from 240kg to 300kg made between 360c/kg and 430c/kg, and heavy steers weighed from 300kg to 370kg and ranged from 350c/kg to 405c/kg.
Lightweight heifers weighed from 180kg to 230kg and sold from 350c/kg to 390c/kg, and heifers from 240kg to 280kg made between 350c/kg and 380c/kg.
Eddie Billing, "Bridgewater", Yetman, sold 200 seven- to nine-month-old Glenavon blood Angus weaners weighing more than 300 kilograms. The 140 steers reached 401c/kg, returning $1396 and 60 heifers topped at 398c/kg, returning $1250.
“That was a real surprise for me because I kept the top 50 heifers, so it was a fantastic sale,” Mr Billing said.
Rodney and Lorraine McKinnon and Ken Langdon, "Pine Cliff", Back Creek, sold 163 seven- to 10-month-old weaners. The 140 Charolais-cross weaners reached a top of 443c/kg and 23 Angus steers sold for 427c/kg.
A line of 313 Santa Gertrudis and Santa/Angus-cross steers from the David family, "Glenirie", Bundarra averaged 417c/kg and $1322. The Santa Gertrudis steers reached a top of 432c/kg.
