UPDATED 1PM: Heavy rains which hit across the weekend are yet to let up on the Mid North Coast with a severe weather warning active for the area.
Elsewhere, the rains have seen rivers swell with flood warnings in place across four rivers.
A trough off the far southern Queensland and northern NSW coasts, with embedded low centres, is generating showers and rain, heavy at times.
The system is expected to weaken and shift north tonight or early Wednesday but has resulted in a severe weather warning for the area.
The Bureau of Meteorology has stated heavy rain and thunderstorms which may lead to flash flooding are forecast to affect northern parts of the Northern Rivers today and possibly early Wednesday.
Rainfall totals in excess of 200mm have fallen in the last 72 hours to 9am today in parts of the Northern Rivers.
Up to about 100mm may fall in northern parts of the Northern Rivers district over the next 24 hours.
Locations which may be affected include Lismore, Murwillumbah, Byron Bay, Ballina, Casino and Kyogle.
However, the severe weather is no longer occurring in the Mid North Coast district and the warning for this district has been cancelled.
During the 72 hours to 9am this morning Tuckarimba and Terania Creek observed 288mm and 286mm respectively.
Over the last 72 hours to 4am Tuesday Mullumbimby has recorded about 291mm, Terania Creek 263mm and Goonengerry about 252mm of rain.
Up to 114mm of rainfall has been recorded during the past 48 hours to 10am Tuesday over the Richmond and Wilsons River valleys.
This rain has caused renewed river level rivers on the upstream tributaries of the Wilsons River.
Up to 35 millimetres of rain has been observed during the past 24 hours to 9am Tuesday over the Orara River valley.
An average of 144mm has fallen in the past 48 hours to 7am over the Brunswick River Valley, with up to 35mm in the past three hours. However, rain has eased considerably since 9am this morning.
Further rainfall is forecast across all these areas for the next 24 to 48 hours which could produce further river level rises. The situation is being closely monitored and revised predictions will be issued if necessary.
