A NEW client bought five bulls including the $9500 sale-topper among the dozen sold at the inaugural Hardigreen Park Santa Gertrudis stud on-property bull sale, Wallabadah, last Thursday.

Selling under the Helmsman system the stud of Moreton and Frances Rolfe, cleared eight bulls of 16 for a $4594 average while another four bulls sold post-sale resulting in 12 averaging $4229.
Hardigreen Park M50, by Wave Hill Hercules H7 (PS), was highly desired by two bidders resulting in a bidding tussle with Garrie and Rita Turnbull the winners at $9500 for their commercial operation at “Willamurra”, Brewarrina.
They bought three bulls at auction and another two later for a $4700 average.
Mr Turnbull said he had heard of Hardigreen Park some 25 years ago when a friend bought a bull and then exhibited it at a Bourke show.
“We came across the stud’s exhibit at Beef Week 2018 and remembered the name, so visited the herd five weeks ago and returned because we liked what we saw,” he said.
Breeding Santas for upwards of 20 years based on Yarrawonga, Watasanta and Rockingham bloodlines, they turn off steers at 10 to 12 months marketing through Dubbo saleyards from the herd of 150 elite and 100 commercial breeders.
“We also try to keep another 100 steers and grow them out to heavier weights when the seasons permit,” Mr Turnbull said.
“We had dabbled with other breeds but Santas are better doers and fit well into this country.
“They are good walkers and have good feet and legs, a must for out here while their mothering ability is tops too.”
Losing bidders were repeat buyers Ben and Amanda Adams, Dangarfield stud, Taroom, Queensland, who then concentrated on Hardigreen Park M40 (PS) by Glenn Oaks Fleetwood F27, which they bought for $4000.
Other returning clients, Robert and Tracey Doak, commercial breeders of “Drogheda”, Bundarra, purchased two bulls, Hardin Green Park M104 (P) by Hardigreen Park Quo Vadis H18 at $5000 and a son of Wave Hill Hercules at $3500.
The Adams and Doaks bid through Elite Livestock Auctions.
Ted and Mary George, Mittabrook stud, Mc Cullys Gap, Muswellbrook, paid $4250 for the Waco Dillon J1256 sired Hardigreen Park M62 (P).
Stud principal, Moreton Rolfe, said the result was very satisfying, considering the extended dry period.
“We were very happy with the buying strength and the prices,” he said.
“The decision to hold our first on-property sale proved to us there is a good local market for our commercially orientated bulls, so this is the first of future annual sales at Hardigreen Park.”
The Moreton family stud of 150 breeders and commercial herd of 100 cows, plus replacement heifers is managed by Colin Patterson and wife, Dion.
The Helmsman sale was conducted by Landmark Tamworth with Joel Fleming officiating.
