The Yass district has long been renowned for the quality of the fine woolled Merino sheep bred on quality lines, but local sheep producers are fast gaining a reputation for their first- and second-cross lambs suitable for growing out to heavy prime lamb weights.
Facilitated by local agency Butt Livestock and Property, Yass, directors Phill and Sally Butt, the third annual cross-bred lamb circuit sale saw top price of $116 paid for Poll Dorset lambs out of first-cross ewes, while $108 was paid twice for pens of Poll Dorset/Merino lambs.
Return buyers and new clients came from Bega, Forbes, Tamworth, Cowra, Corowa, Gunning, Temora, Cootamundra and Young, as well as the local area.
The sale was a credit to the vendors who presented their lambs in very good condition, according to selling agent Phill Butt.
“The quality of the lambs was reflected in the result of the sale,” Mr Butt said.
“The lambs were all weighed into weight groups with good even lines available to the buyers.”
