A GREGORY wheat crop grown at a Myall Creek property has taken out the Inverell Ag Bureau’s wheat crop competition.

The crop, grown by Warren, Janelle, Andrew and Richard Rogers, was judged by Inverell Ag Bureau president Bob Albinus, and Northern Tablelands Local Land Services mixed farming officer Glen Uebergang and had an estimated yield of 7.5 tonnes per hectare.
As entrants aren’t eligible for more than one prize, the best wheat yield award went to Scott and Therese Cole, “Nordale”, Delungra, with another good crop of Gregory that had an estimated yield of 6.92t/ha.
The Ballinger Partnership, made up of Kevin and Marlene Ballinger, Sean and Judith Ballinger and Nigel and Madonna Ballinger, received the best agronomy award for a paddock of Suntop wheat at “Lecoin”, Delungra.
In the barley competition, Geoff, Robyn and Jarrod Uebergang, “Kenyu”, Delungra, took out the best overall point score with a clean crop yielding 6.2 t/ha.
Steve Symonds, “Arakoola Springs”, Wallangra had the best yield of 6.57t/ha and Inverell grower Dave Stewart, “Auburn Vale”, won the award for best agronomy.
Judge Glen Uebergang said the region’s good result followed widespread rain early in the season.
“As a result of the favorable season and the good management of producers we consistently saw well established, very clean, high yielding crops,” Mr Uebergang said.
“Top points were awarded for nutrition programs that addressed the nutrients that were most limiting to plant growth with consideration to plant available water
Extra points were given to crop rotations that included the use of legumes and other non-cereal crops for weed management, and a reduced reliance on single herbicide groups.
“The use of legumes also brings nitrogen benefits and spreads farm production risk. In general all crops demonstrated good weed, disease, insect and soil management.,” Mr Uebergang said.
