To be held at Booroomooka Angus, Bingara, the field day is being presented by Hoffman Beef Consulting in conjunction with the Munro family.
Organiser Bill Hoffman said the theme for the day was “bull buying – just another cost or an investment for improved productivity and profit in the future?”
The day will focus on how to select bulls to drive up future productivity and profits.
“Boosting productivity is the key driver in reducing cost of production in commercial beef businesses and as all beef breeders need to buy bulls, they might as well buy ones which will improve the herd’s genetic base,” Mr Hoffman said.
Key note speaker Dr Rob Banks, director of the Animal Genetic and Breeding Unit at UNE Armidale, said genetic improvement can grow a beef business continually, help beat the cost-price squeeze and be a win-win combination with better pastures and pasture management.
Dr Banks will be presenting a session on how genetic improvement can add dollars to the returns of commercial beef producers.
Wayne Upton from Applied Animal Breeding Consultants will speak about how to determine what a bull’s “real” value is.
“Commercial beef producers are faced with making this decisions at bull sales every year and this presentation is designed to assist with that decision making as just paying higher prices does not necessarily mean they are getting better bulls,” Mr Hoffman said.
Maximising the return on investments in bulls by optimising life-time fertility is another topic for the field day and well known specialist cattle vet Ben Gardiner from Barraba will cover this topic and share his extensive knowledge and practical experience gained by a long commitment to the field of bull fertility.
The field day starts at 9.30am and cost is $40 to attend.
