A QUALITY, even pen of Angus/Charolais steers won the inaugural Virbac Weaner Challenge shield at Tamworth Regional Livestock Exchange (TRLX) last Friday.

Tony and Tania Haling, “Hillside Park”, Woolbrook, won the $1500 prize as part of the annual competition with their high quality draft of weaners.
Commission livestock buyer Rob McCarthy judged the competition, saying it was the most even pen of cattle presented.
“It was a credit to most of the vendors to get the better end of the cattle in good condition under the dry conditions of the past 12 to 18 months.
“Last year those weaners would have been 80 kilograms to 100kg heavier across the board – the lighter weights are indicative of the season.”
Mr Haling sold 386 weaners, a mixture of Angus and Angus/Charolais.
The 219 steers averaged $579, with the top price of $665.
Mr Haling’s 167 heifers averaged $497 to top at $600.
The weaner challenge prize package included more than $1000 worth of product from Virbac Animal Health and $500 cash from the Tamworth Saleyards Selling Agents Association.
